Trophies

All winners of the Regatta will be presented with medals. On Saturday, many of the events are also associated with trophies. Many trophies originate from the late 19th Century! The photo gallery holds pictures and information on the trophies of the Reading Amateur Regatta.

The Reading Grand Challenge Cup

The Reading Grand Challenge cup for Senior Eights was presented to the committee by the then governor of Reading Jail, Captain Carleton V. Blyth, when the Regatta was revived in 1877. Although there was a grand cup class event in the regatta program at various times in the following years, it did not prosper until it was again introduced in 1950. Then the reading Grand Challenge Cup returned to its rightful position and Mr. Francis A. Balsom presented the Austin Balsom Challenge cup for Thames Cup Eights.



In 2016 this trophy is allocated to - Elite Mens Eights

The Guinness Cup

A race for Senior Coxed Fours was introduced by the Regatta Committee in 1959 in order to assist the A.R.A. to improve standards of British Rowing in the international field. The Guinness cup was presented in 1964 by Messrs. Arthur Guinness,Son and Co. (Park Royal) ltd.

The Stanmore Challenge Bowl

The Stanmore Challenge Bowl was anonymously presented to the Regatta Committee in 1950 for competition among Senior Fours of the Stewards Cup Class.



In 2016 this trophy is allocated to - Elite Mens Coxless Fours

The Dymore Brown Challenge Cup

A race for pairs was introduced in 1935 and in the following year Mr. And Mrs. Dymore Brown presented the Dymore Brown Challenge Cup

The Charles Dodd Challenge Cup

The Charles Dodd Challenge Cup for Senior Sculls was presented in 1928 by the then President of the Regatta, the late Mr. Charles Dodd, to commemorate his 40 years association with the Regatta



In 2016 this trophy is allocated to - Elite Mens Sculls

Janet D. Snow Trophy

The Janet D. Snow Trophy was first presented in 1977 in memory of Mrs. Janet Snow for Senior B Eights.



In 2016 this trophy is allocated to - Womens Elite Quadruple Sculls

The J.P. Turrill Challenge Cup

The J.P. Turrill Challenge Cup was presented to the Committee in May 1974 by the Turrill Family in memory of Col. J.P. Turrill of Reading Rowing Club. It was first awarded for the Senior B Coxed Fours at the Senior Regatta in 1974



In 2016 this trophy is allocated to - Mens IM1 Coxed Fours

The Reading Challenge Vase

The Reading Challenge Vase was presented to the Regatta by the late George Palmer Esq., M.P. in 1879 for Coxed Fours. In 1881 it was changed so that coxless fours could compete for the trophy, later this became the Wyford Class Fours.



In 2016 this trophy is allocated to - Elite Mens Quadruple Sculls

The Sandeman Challenge Cup

The Sandeman Challenge Cup was presented by the late Mr. A.G. Sandeman to the Regatta in 1880. It was given for competition for Fours from clubs between Oxford and Staines, but was transferred to an Eights event in 1881.



In 2016 this trophy is allocated to - Mens IM1 Eights

The logan Dahne Cup

Dr. S.F. Logan Dahne, President of the Regatta, on occasion of his retirement when he left Reading to return to his native Wales, presented the Logan Dahne Cup for Junior Senior Coxed fours, a new event introduced by the Committee in the same year, 1966.

The Botley & Lewis Challenge Cup

The Botley & Lewis Challenge Cup for Junior Scullers was presented to the Regatta Committee by the Reading Silversmiths, Messrs. Botley & Lewis in 1924.



In 2016 this trophy is allocated to - Junior 16 Quadruple Sculls

The Reading Challenge Bowl

The Reading Challenge Bowl was presented to the Regatta by Arthur Hill Esq. in 1879 for competition among scullers. In 1892 is was presented as a challenge bowl for Junior Fours.



In 2016 this trophy is allocated to - Mens IM1 Coxless Fours

The Miller Cup

In 1924 a race for Junior Senior Scullers was instituted and in 1931, the late Mr. A.W. Miller presented the Committee with the Miller Cup.



In 2016 this trophy is allocated to - Womens Elite Single Sculls

The University Of Reading Challenge Trophy

In 1927 members of the Reading University presented the University of Reading Challenge Trophy for public school Fours. In 1953 on the formation of the Junior Regatta, the trophy was transferred to Public School Eights (Princess Elizabeth Cup Class) but to widen the entry in 1956, it was made open only to Public School Eights not competing at Henley Royal Regatta.



In 2016 this trophy is allocated to - Junior 18 Eights

The Lipscombe Cup

In 1954 Mr. N.H. Lipscombe, for many years Secretary of the Regatta Committee and successively Chairman of the Clinker Boat Regatta Committee and of the Reading Amateur Regatta Committee, presented the Lipscombe Challenge Cup for competition amongst local schools. It was awarded to the winners of the Junior School (Colts) Four event.



In 2016 this trophy is allocated to - Junior 18 Coxed Fours

The Newman Memorial Trophy

The Newman Memorial Trophy was presented to the Regatta Committee in 1966 on the dissolution of the Reading Tradesmen's Regatta Committee. For many years Mr. Newman was the Boatman to the Reading Tradesmen's Rowing Club. It was first offered for competition among Novice Fours (lightweight) in 1967.

The Haslam Trophy

The J. Haslam Trophy for Novice Eights was presented in memory of the late J. Haslam, the Reading auctioneer. The original cup was lost in 1966, although the plinth was recovered and remains the original. A replacement trophy to fit the original plinth was obtained in 1966.



In 2016 this trophy is allocated to - Womens Elite Coxless Fours

The Royal Military Academy Challenge Cup

This trophy was presented to the Regatta by the R.M.A. Sandhurst in June 1971.



In 2016 this trophy is allocated to - Womens Junior Quadruple Sculls
